Query of the day

What makes 'Friends' such an exceedingly watchable show? Most of us have seen every episode of it ever and still we watch reruns everyday? (I watch it twice a day, on two different channels. And if nothing else is coming on TV I can even watch the week-that-was on the weeked!) We even laugh everytime. Sometimes at their jokes or sometimes just in anticipation of a joke that's coming up. What is it about 'Friends' that we can't get enough of it?

Comments are welcome.

Humour. don't u think? Life can tend to get very mundane n exhausting but the fact that they deal with every situation like, ex-wife (almost)sleeping with ur closest friend, in a humorous way is what keeps me coming back.

have a couple of thoughts on this so may get a little carried away but here goes

-at a very basic level it gives u a virtual set of friends whom u can enjoy without having to be ACTIVE- and us lazy souls love that

-3 men and 3 women living in new york- the coolest appartments, even cooler clothes, cool proffessions (mostly)- lil strings - what else do you want

- and most importantly , here is a set of friends who have the most fun with each other with no hang ups- no affectations of moods and swings - we have few times like these -we wish would go on forever where as these guys never ever have real hangups- monica welcoming back pheobe inspite of knowing she wanted to cut her out, ross being ok with no one wanting to hear about dinnasours (imagine that)- its all all of it in good humour....
wish we could all be so hangupless

Hi Anonymous (even though I actually know who you are!)

They certainly have got their jokes bang on! They just never feel stale. Maybe once or twice in their entire run of 10 years! Like that irritating "Joey's hand twin" thing they had going whne they go to Las Vegas.
But yeah, on the whole, I must agree, their humour really is pure gold.

Lemon Tree,
Not to make this seem like an analytical class, but I think you've got a point in the whole, "they're living the lives we all wish we could" argument. Who doesn't want those looks, those designer clothes, those awesome apartments and those absolutely fun and crazy lives?!??

Damn American television for creating such heights to want to live up to. From now on, I'm only watching shows about people with normal bodies and crappy jobs!

You just try... no way in the world will you be caught dead watching the shitty crap (that looks like shit and feels like crap) doled out on DD and its post 1991 cousins... crap such as "Kahani Ghar Ghar ki". Actually I have never watched that serial (because I am blissfully packed away in a beautiful corner of the US where the trees have already starting changing color in celebration of fall) but I can imagine what that stupid sounding serial could be all about.

Anyways about the query. I think beyond just being humorous, its also about helping your gray cell mature... because I tell you these buggers can get really lazy, and the only way you can get them going is if you feed them some intelligent humor - not slapstick, not funny faces, not silly jokes - they decidedly thrive on intelligent humor. Why else would you be blogging away all day... why else would you be prefecting the art of making other people laugh with your opinions and advice.. its not because they make sense, but because the gray cells get a kick out of seeing things from an unadulterated taboo-less perspective.

Now if my comments dont sound humor, you know exactly whom to blame (the gray ofcourse). But be gentle even when you cuss them. They have taken a lot of hit this past week, and all they know is that its 1.11 am now on Friday night and being on the computer just doesnt make sense.
